How to be Prepared for a Hurricane
Gather Information
Find the latest info on tropical cyclone hazards in Hawaii by checking your local news or check with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather website.
Prepare Your Home
If you don’t have storm shutters, board up all vulnerable accesses such as doors, windows, and garage doors. Pick up and store loose items in and around the outside of your home. You can install hurricane clips to your roof (this will also save you money on you insurance). Prepare your home.
Develop a Plan
Answer questions like – who do you contact? Where is the nearest shelter? Where is our family/business meeting place? Where do I find information? Where are our escape routes? A great link to help you get started is: ready.Gov emergency plan page.
Take Inventory of Your Home
A home inventory can be a list supported by time stamped photographs/video of the items or personal belongings you have in your home, condo or apartment. Don’t forget the outside of your home as well. Keep information safe with your important documents.
Disaster Kit
Make sure your disaster kit has enough non-perishable food and water for at least 7 days. Keep 10 days worth of medication on hand, and make copies of important documents. Have what you need to survive without power, while staying comfortable.
Review Your Insurance Coverage
Do you know your deductible and policy number? Contact your agent to make sure that your policy is current, and payments are up to date. Make sure you have policy information in the event your property is damaged during the storm including your agent’s name and phone number, best way to file a claim, and your policy number.
